Contrary to popular opinion, compost isn’t supposed to stink. You only need three things for a compost pile: nitrogen, carbon, and a pitch fork. The correct ratio for compost is C/N 30:1, which means for every 30 parts carbon, you need 1 part nitrogen, but this can be hard to determine since you don’t know the exact levels of anything you put in your compost pile. You can assess your accuracy by how fast the process is working. If it stinks, it isn’t working fast enough, because there is too much nitrogen. One of the easiest solutions is to mix in shredded paper or tissue to speed up the process.
