If Your Most Important Documents are in a Safe at Home, What Else Should They Be In?
- File Box
- File Folder
- Ziploc Bag
Answer: Ziploc Bag
A safe can keep your documents from prying eyes and even from the ravages of a fire. However, if your safe isn’t sealed tight from smoke and water, it’s also best to keep those documents inside a Ziploc bag. This way, if there is a fire or flood, your most important documents will still be legible and retain their value.
Personal documents, such as your birth certificate, marriage license, or title to your car, should always be stored safely inside your home. A safe is ideal, but only if it isn’t portable. Portability offers convenience, but not security. If you do use a portable safe, place it inside a filing cabinet that has a lock on it.
If you absolutely don’t have any other option, put your personal documents in an empty food box in your refrigerator or freezer. No one will think to look in there and they will be safe from damage in the event of a house fire.
