(Modern Survival.org) – What Can You Use to Keep Your Tent Cool or Warm?

  • Ground
  • Heater
  • Blankets
  • Aluminum Foil

Answer: Aluminum Foil. Here’s why…

Temperature control can make a primitive camping trip more enjoyable, or it can mean the difference between life and death in a survival situation. After all, in as little as three hours, exposure to the elements can be lethal. Knowing how to trap heat inside your tent — or deflect it — can be a lifesaver.

With the proper know-how and reflective material such as a survival blanket or even aluminum foil, the temperature inside a tent can be altered.

Stay Cool in the Sun

When the sun is blistering hot, and the tent has become an oven, trying to escape the heat by retreating inside isn’t going to do much good. By placing aluminum foil or a space blanket on top of the tent, the sunlight will be reflected away. This will reduce the heat that makes its way into the tent, cooling it inside.

In a situation where search and rescue is required, a reflective material will also be easy to identify by helicopters or planes as they fly overhead.

Warm it Up Inside

By placing reflective material inside the tent, rather than over the top, the heat from the sunlight will be reflected back into the room. This will help to heat the interior of the tent. Aluminum foil will also work as an insulator by trapping the heat inside the tent.

Knowing how to stay warm or cool, depending on the environment, is very important in a survival situation. According to the rule of three for survival, exposure to the elements can be deadly in as little as three hours. One way to stay safe from hypothermia, or even heat exhaustion, is by wearing the correct clothing for the area and time of year.
