The symptom-based screenings are in response to an outbreak of coronavirus in Wuhan which has already claimed the lives of at least 50 people.
Unfortunately, the virus can be spread before symptoms begin to appear which limits the effectiveness of the screenings.
So far, over 2000 cases of the viral pneumonia have been reported in China.
In 2002 a different coronavirus, SARS, spread from China and infected over two dozen countries. This outbreak took nearly 800 lives.
Keeping an eye on developing situations such as this is a key survival trait. We must know when a potential threat is lurking, even if the danger is microscopic.
