What to Do If a Violent Fight Breaks Out Next to You

What-to-Do-If-a-Violent-Fight-Breaks-Out-Next-to-You

(ModernSurvival.org) – Anyone who has been in a real fight, or even witnessed one, can tell you it is far different than what you see on television. There aren’t any choreographed moves and no back-and-forth punching for minutes on end. Generally, a real fight is quick and brutal.

When a fight breaks out nearby, be it one-on-one or even an all-out barroom brawl, what is the proper course of action to stay safe?

Don’t Get Involved

Should a fight break out in the immediate vicinity, get away and call 9-1-1. Getting involved, or attempting to break the fight up, is a bad idea for several reasons:

  • The risk of injury in a fight is high. One punch can be enough to induce coma or even death.
  • Even winning can be dangerous. The risk of injury from fighting isn’t exclusive to the loser of the confrontation. Knuckles often split open when punching or get impaled by broken teeth. Exchanging bodily fluid with the other person, who may be a stranger, is dangerous (think HIV and other blood-borne illnesses).
  • Legal Complications. Not only is there a risk of bodily harm, but financial damage as well. If the police get involved, chances are that arrests will be made. In this day and age, the threat of being sued for getting involved is also something to consider.

Unfortunately, sometimes a fight is unavoidable no matter how hard one tries. If that time comes, it is better to have some self-defense training to fall back on than to end up staring at the sky from your back.
