After the March 22nd terrorist attacks in Belgium, former Republican U.S. Presidential Candidate, Ted Cruz, said law enforcement should be empowered to “patrol and secure Muslim neighborhoods before they become radicalized.” In defending the plan, Cruz cited former New York Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, for his aggressive policing efforts, including the alleged targeting of Muslim neighborhoods for surveillance.
“Our European allies are now seeing what comes of a toxic mix of migrants who have been infiltrated by terrorists and isolated, radical Muslim neighborhoods.
We need to immediately halt the flow of refugees from countries with a significant al Qaida or ISIS presence.
We need to empower law enforcement to patrol and secure Muslim neighborhoods before they become radicalized.” ~ Former GOP Presidential Nominee Ted Cruz
Donald Trump’s Viewpoint
“I would support that. Yes, 100 percent. I bet you the local police know much more about what’s going on than anybody would understand … they know the gang members. Local police know plenty about the Muslims, too, but the police have been so hurt and so left out and so discouraged by what’s happening,” Trump said, referring to officer-related incidents that have sparked ongoing controversy.
Trump also cited the example of Paris attacks suspect, Salah Abdeslam, who was arrested Friday outside Brussels. The New York businessman claimed people in that neighborhood knew he was there, but didn’t turn him in because of their shared religion.
Trump also said in light of the Belgium attacks, he would “go further” than waterboarding when investigating suspects in terrorism-related cases.
Many Democrats feel the comments are both foolish and incendiary and whole-heartedly disagree with law enforcement patrolling Muslim neighborhoods. Hillary Clinton said, “Proposing that doesn’t make you sound tough,” Clinton said. “It makes you sound like you’re in over your head.”
Clinton proposed a multi-prong approach to defeating ISIS — intensify bomb attacks on its strongholds in Iraq and Syria, support Kurdish rebel groups, eliminate “key enablers” of terror and enlist Silicon Valley in using the Internet to root out extremists. “We need to rely on what actually works,” Clinton said. “Not bluster that alienates our partners and doesn’t make us any safer.”
What are your thoughts? Is it foolish and incendiary for police to patrol Muslim neighborhoods or a smart move that could potentially save American lives? You decide.
“Will America have the same result as Europe or will it have a different outcome when it comes to dealing with Muslim immigrants and communities?”
