Remember When the US Dropped a Toilet Bowl On the Enemy…

VA-25-Squadron

(Modern Survival.org) – Occasionally, history can be stranger than fiction. Such was the case in November of 1965 during the chaos of the Vietnam War. Aboard a VA-25 A-1 Skyraider, CDR Clarence W. Stoddard, Jr. took off from the USS Midway with a rather unusual payload destined for North Korea.

In the following video, We Are The Mighty provides both archival footage of “Operation Sani-Flush”, and a little history of this quirky “bomb”:

As you can see in the video, the bomb carried by the Skyraider was unusual in the fact it wasn’t a bomb at all. It was a toilet.

A plane captain on the Midway rescued a damaged toilet that was supposed to be thrown overboard, and the flight crew outfitted it with a rack, tailfins, and nose fuse. Once the “bomb” was loaded onto the Skyraider, the checkers blocked the view of it from the air boss and captain of the Midway.

As the A1-Skyraider shot off the carrier, the bridge sent out a message asking, “What the hell was on 572’s right wing?”

Times of war are hard on everyone, and sometimes a little playfulness is needed to break the tension. Even if it comes in the form of toilet humor.
