Critical Infrastructure Crippled – Prepare NOW

( – For years, preppers have been warning of cyberattacks that could cripple the country’s critical infrastructure. This threat, they claim, could lead to a variety of issues from shortages of vital supplies to full-blown blackouts rolling across the nation. While most people have blown these claims off as baseless conspiracy theories, recent events are making them eat their words.

On Saturday, May 8, 2021, the Colonial Pipeline confirmed it was attacked by hackers using ransomware, causing the company to shut down operations. The fallout from this remains to be seen, but could be disastrous, as the company supplies half of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel used on the eastern coast of the United States.

The attack was so damaging that the Department of Transportation has issued a regional emergency declaration in response. So far, 17 states and the District of Columbia have been impacted by the cyber attack.

A Bigger Problem

This cyberattack, staged by the hacker group known as DarkSide, follows the SolarWinds cybersecurity breach last year which infiltrated government agencies and massive corporations such as Microsoft. The kicker here is that the SolarWinds hack went undetected for nine months.

While SolarWinds showed the United States government can be hacked with the intent to spy, the Colonial Pipeline attack raises even more warning signs, as it is a direct assault on the energy system in the US. What would have happened if the ransomware had been targeted at the greater power grid?

Get Ready…

If ever there was a time in history where the prepper lifestyle was completely justified, it is now. The coronavirus pandemic and subsequent panic buying notwithstanding, the spike in cyber attacks is reason enough for anyone to begin preparing to face weeks or months without power.

To further explain the issue, Canadian Prepper has provided the following video:

Even if future cyberattacks do not come, the Colonial Pipeline hack has the potential to cause a lot of problems throughout the country — starting with rising gas prices. This may not seem like that big of a deal at first glance, but when the domino effect is considered, this could become a major issue.

Rising gas prices will lead to increased costs for all items that require transportation to stores, from food to essential supplies. This additional strain on an economy that is already hurting could have unforeseen, and potentially catastrophic, consequences. Only time will tell.

If a cyberattack were to knock out the power grid, leaving the country in darkness, there are a few simple steps to take immediately to help ensure long-term survival. To see what these are, take a look at our article on what to do first in a power outage.
