(ModernSurvival.org) – No matter how much a person prepares for an emergency, sometimes Mother Nature takes a swing that’s impossible to dodge. For tourists enjoying a scenic boat ride on Lake Furnas in Brazil on Saturday, this fact became a terrifying reality.

As the video above shows, a section of the canyon wall broke away, collapsing onto the boats below. Despite their efforts to speedily escape the massive slab of stone, at least two of the vehicles were crushed.

Investigators are busy combing through the wreckage looking for the deceased. Currently, the death toll from the shocking event sits at 10. According to Fox News, dozens more suffered injuries.

Romeu Zema, the governor of Minas Gerais (the Brazilian state where the disaster took place), claims heavy rainfall is to blame for the “wall of stones” coming down. Aside from the massive slab of stone, the rain has also forced roughly 17,000 people to evacuate their homes.

The Brazilian President, Jair Bolsanaro, states the situation is a “disaster’ and is sending the Navy to aid local emergency services to assist in rescue efforts.

While this horrific tragedy was unavoidable for those caught beneath the wall of death, not every boating emergency means instant death — even if the boat sinks. To see how to survive being trapped inside a sunken boat, take a look at our article here.
